Notes on being an emotional, functional, productive, grounded, peaceful man in the modern world.

The Mindful Man is a contemplative and poetic look at what it is to be a reflective male soul in the 21st century. I found the pathway through physical, emotional, family, brotherhood, sacred, working and mindful man a tender journey of discovery for both writer and reader. It also gave hope and inspiration that early life challenges need not keep us shackled to an old story, that with the right tools and support, we can step out of toxic, harmful, addictive patterns with grace and humility and embrace our ‘one wild and precious life’. - Amber Ponton – Write to Freedom Facilitator

Caspar Walsh is a retreat leader, teacher and writer, leading workshops to help men explore an authentic life through mindfulness. His first book Criminal (Headline Review) was the harrowing story of his wild childhood punctuated by drugs, violence, sexual abuse and the frequent absences of a father in prison. It’s the story of how Caspar inevitably became part of his father’s world: doing drugs, dealing drugs, doing time. Eventually, as a young man, Caspar dragged himself out of the gutter, out of prison and out of crime and made the decision to rehabilitate himself. He is a co-founder of A Band of Brothers, recipient of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, which promotes positive, social change through the development of community and rites of passage for men. Caspar wrote a column for The Guardian for three years, has held writer’s residencies in several UK prisons and lives in the wild countryside of Devon with his beloved partner, Amber.

Caspar says: “This book is about taking an honest look at how we can connect and keep in touch with our emotions, our creativity our community, our sense of purpose, humility and humour! How do we return to what is sacred? To have a lighter footprint on the earth? To do the things that make us happy beyond status, position and wealth? How do we treat ourselves, others and the planet with kindness and respect? The Mindful Man follows on from my memoir, Criminal, which ended with me in my thirties. This is what happened over the next two decades. How I found and made peace with my demons. How I discovered purpose and meaning through the natural world, community and creativity. It looks at how I am, how we are, as men emotionally, spiritually, physically and in relationship to ourselves and the wider world. How we can be more gentle, vulnerable and powerful. It’s offered as a bridge between those many aspects of ourselves and our communities that make us truly human. To find a way to be and live and work together, to become men of the 21st Century, eyes, ears and hearts open.”
